Eating in Antigua


The variety of food in Antigua is very rich and exciting. There are many restaurants which offer local and international food. Guatemalan cuisine is famous by the candy from Antigua, it is very popular when the tourists visit the country for first time. At the beginning, these candies were made only inside the religious convents of the city by the nuns and with secret recipes. But these recipes eventually found their way out the thick walls of the convent and they were improved by the populace of the city. Now there is a great variety of flavors thanks to the big number of local fruits. Each family has a particular recipe and a particular flavor for the same candy. That is absolutely wonderful by the candy lovers. Besides, in the city you can find many candy shops where you can enjoy of the most famous candies of Antigua like “Zapotillos”, “Higos Cristalizados” (figs crystallized), “Canillitas de Leche”, “Colochos de Guayaba” o “Huevo Chimbo”.
The bread and the bakeries are also famous traditions in Antigua. It would say that you don’t know the city, if you haven’t tasted its bread. Here you can find an impressive variety of bread, from the daily bread available in many kinds and forms to the bread enriched with sugar and anise. There are excellent bakeries like “Panadería San Antonio” and “Doña Luisa” where you can buy any kind of bread.
The Tamales are very popular in Guatemala mainly on Christmas when the “Tamales” are the stars; during this time in Antigua are preparing three kinds of tamales the “Colorado” (red) which is the most common in Guatemala (all the year), the small “chuchito” (wrapped with corn husks) and the “Tamal Negro” (black) which is prepared only in Christmas and special events. The black tamal is based in chocolate sauce and has also raising, dried plums and nuts. If you decide to eat tamales, you should remember that the big leaf on which red tamales are served is a plantain leaf and is not edible.
Others popular meals in Antigua and Guatemala are: “Pollo a la cerveza” (chicken beer), “Pavo relleno”( turkey stuffing), “Jocon”, “Hilachas”, “Frijoles fritos” (fried beans) amongst others.
Obviously if you do not want to try the local food, Antigua offers a great variety of restaurants of international food including Asian, French, Mexican, German, Italian and American food.
