Monteverde Butterfly Garden


This place is one of the most important attractions in Monteverde  and was founded in 1989 by couple composed of the biologist Jim Wolf and his wife Marta Iris. The scope of the garden is making aware and educating visitors about the importance of butterflies and natives insect for the ecosystem balance.


The butterfly garden owns a biodiversity center which has a great collection of insects and arachnids many of them are living. One of the best experiences is watching how the butterflies emerge from their chrysalides. The garden has 50 butterfly species amongst them the Calico butterfly, the one butterfly that produces noise. The garden owns also a Leaf Cutter Ant Colony which surprises most visitors. It is wonderful watching ants while they work carry leafs and cultivate fungus.


 Another attraction in the park is the medicinal plant garden that owns more than 70 different species; there are guides and posters which explain the medicinal properties of these plants.


The place has got 4 different habitats each one simulates a specific ecosystem of Costa Rica with different temperatures, forest and humid. The tour lasts one hour half and costs $9 for adults and $3 for kids, it includes guides. The garden opens every day from 9.30 to 16:00.




Orchids Garden


This garden has 426 of the 500 orchids species of Monteverde, including the Costa Rica national flower “Guardia Morada”(Catteleya skinneri), Maxiillaria, Epindendrum, Oncidium, cymbidium species and the star of the garden “Platystele jungermannioids”, the smallest orchid of the world.

 

The main scope of the garden is investigation and conservation of orchids species.The owner and creator of this earthly Eden is the biologist Gabriel Barbosa. The garden is situated to 7 Km fron Santa Elena at the main road to Monteverde Reserve and opens from 8:00 to 16:00; admission costs $5 including a guide.




Serpentario


Costa Rica has 15 different killer snake species like “Terciopelo”, “La Toboba de altura”, “tree’s snake”, “la tamaga”, “la coral”, “la cascabel” and more. All them are in this zoo which has more than 40 snake species besides many frogs. Animals are kept in natural habitats but visitors can see them comfortably an safely. The zoo opnes every days from 9:00 to 20:00.Admision costs $7 for adults and children less than 7 years free.




Ranario Monteverde (Monteverde Frog pond)


This zoo is managed by a group of biologists  and owns different habitats which simulates the special condition of live of each specie . This place has 28 natives species amongst frogs and toads. there are bilingual guide available. The “Ranario” opens every days from 9:00 to 20:30. Admission costs $8 for adults and children less than 6 free.




Monteverde Bat Jungle


This is a institution dedicated to research of bats and exhibits the work made by Dr. Richard La Val a bat expert who has investigated during 40 years these creatures.


In the place you can see a full collection with all types of bats, besides you can learn many features of   your behavior, your diet, and you anatomy as well as the great importance of these creatures for the balance ecosystem.
It has also 40 live bats of 7 different species in a special designed place. There you will be able to watch how life these animals through a glass that encloses the habitat. Also you will be able to hear the ultrasonic echolocation calls by the bats. That is possible thanks to a special microphone designed for this scope.


The locate opens from 9:00 to 20:00 and admission costs $8 for adults, $6 for students and children.
