Horseback Riding
The Monteverde zone is a perfect place for to do horseback riding because there are many quiet trails which cross the forest allowing to visitor to explorer calmly the jungle.
For Monteverde’s farmers riding isn’t a hobby since they usually use horses for transport them; because many roads are simply impassable with a vehicle.
In Montverde it isn’t permitted to ride into Reserves; so there are some private sides where you can enjoy riding while you watch birds, coffee plantations, mountains, canyons and the cloud forest that surround the area. The cost can vary depending on the length of ride.
Canopy
This system composes of platforms, zip lines; suspension bridges and trails allow tourists to have a particular view of jungle and it is very popular in Costa Rica. Almost all travel agencies of Monteverde offer this activity as part of their tours. Usually the canopy system is between 18 and 22 meters high, and their platforms are separated from 60 to 80 meters one of other. Cables’ weight limit is 125 Kg(275 pound more or less). Usually the canopy tour lasts 2 or 3 hours and cost from $15 to $20. If you want to watch the forest, this is a great option.
Mountain Bike
Another popular activity here is the mountain bike , Monteverde there are so cool places for this exciting sport . The small and dangerous trails through the forest are a unforgettable experience. Besides you can cross Costa Rica from the Pacific to the Caribbean coast through Conquistadores route .Monteverde has your own mountain bike club the “Ecobike Monteverde” which organizes some trips. But there are also many travel agencies and hotels which rent bike for $10 per hour or $35 per day (more or less).
Hidden Valley Night Tour
This a night tour through the forest located between Santa Elena and the Monteverde Reserve. If with light the forest is impressive at night is simply amazing. The great variety of nocturnal creatures and the bizarre view of the forest make the ride an unforgettable experience.
The tour starts at dawn and lasts around two hours. Hidden Valley is a private reserve, it has 11 acres and admission costs $17 for adults and $ 10 for children less than 10 years old.
Hiking
This form of walking is offered commonly by travel agencies and hotels in Monteverde. The tours include beautiful zones into the cloud forest. Zones which it can arrive only walking like Monteverde Reserve or Santa Elena Reserve. Monteverde offer almost 24 Km of well maintain trails in where it can see thousands species of plants, frogs, snakes, birds and insects. Another free option is the road up to Cerro Amigos(1840 m), which is the highest peak of the zone. On the top of the peak there is a beautiful view of the cloud forest, Arenal Volcano 20 Km away to the northeast, Nicaragua and the Pacific Ocean. The trails from Santa Elena to the Arenal Volcano also are good option for hikers.
Rafting
Costa Rica and mainly Monteverde thanks your geography and weather offer a great number of rivers with white waters in where it possible to practice this sport during all the year. Almost all travel agencies and many hotels offer guides and the necessary equipment for these kinds of trips; the majority of them include the Toro River. Prices of trips depend on the duration and distance of themselves.
