The Cathedral

This ancient and beautiful monument was constructed in 1551 .It is a great example of renaissance and “mestizo baroque”. Into the cathedral is specially remarkable the major altar and the dome, which is crowned by the “Cruz de Tarabuco” (the cross of Tarabuco) that is a true work of art.

 

The Cathedral’s museum was organized from works of art belonged to archbishop “Victor Arrien” ; after this collection was extended with art pieces of others churches  and convents. The cathedral has got one of the best collections of sacred art (paint, sculpture, jewels and Gregorian music) of Bolivia from XVI, XVII and XVIII centuries.



Dinosaur Marks (Cal Orck'o)

 

This place is situated to 10 Km at the north of the city in it, you will be able to see  depicts dinosaur, footprints as wells as prehistoric plant and animal fossils. That is the world's largest paleontological site with around 5,000 impressions of dinosaur footprints from 320 different animals. It is located in a quarry that is still used . The place was only discovered in 1994. Scientists found dinosaur footprints and fossilized remains of turtles, crocodiles, fish and algae from the late Cretacious period.

 

These vestiges of the past contribute with much new information about that period . The tracks more spectacular are them belong to Tyrannosaurus the biggest predator amongst the dinosaurs.  Cal Orck'o also has the record Guinness by the longest continuous track: over 350 meters of a predator’s footprints.



 

Casa de la Libertad (Freedom's Home)

 

Located on the main plaza, is here where the Declaration of Independence of Bolivia was signed on August 6th, 1825 .This building is the most important historical site of Bolivia. Before the building was the local of   the Jesuit Mayor University, whose foundation was in 1624. The building’s walls are decorated with paintings of Simon Bolivar and Antonio Jose de Sucre, for who the city is named.

 

The building includes an ample claustro around by galleries of one floor under cupolas, which   are supported by stone columns. In the bottom of  claustro is that was  the ancient chapel of the university “San Francisco Xavier”. The main hall was the place where the aspirants to the degree of doctor of Charcas explained your thesis; in this hall was where the independence of Bolivia it approved  in 1825 . Since 1825 until 1898 the building was used by the Bolivian Congress; in it was signed the first Constitution which was written by “Simon Bolivar”   . Actually the building is used as museum in where ancient documents and relics of republic period are saved.

 

The church of "San Francisco"

 

The temple’s construction was made between 1577 and 1618.The major chapel was made for the architect “Martin de Oviedo” thanks to the donation that in 1595 did the general “Francisco de Hinojosa”. The church is celebrated for the “bell of freedom” calling Sucre’s citizens to revolt on May 25th, 1809.

 

The church of "San Lazaro "

 

Constructed in 1544, the church has an altarpiece made for the sculptor “Juan Hernandez”. The  temple is a example of the architecture style with “open chapel”, is the oldest church of the “Audiencia de Charcas”.

 

La Biblioteca Nacional (National Library)

 

Contains important and historical documents from XVI to The XX centuries including those belonged the “Audiencia de Charcas” and the Republic.
