St. Petersburg was founded by Tsar Peter the Great on May 27, 1703 as a "window on Europe"Â, it's located in Northwestern Federal District of Russia on the delta of the Neva River at the east end of the Gulf of Finland. It served as the capital of the Russian Empire for 200 years and ceased being it in 1918 when the government moved to Moscow after Russian Revolution of 1917.
St. Petersburg is a really beautiful city; it combines its fascinating Russian heritage with a distinctly European outlook and is considered the cultural heart of modern day Russia.
