Transport in Moscow


The most comfortable and fastest way to get Moscow is by plane. The city has two international airports the “Domodedovo” (the most modern to 40 Km/30 minutes of the Downtown) and the “Sheremetevo-2” (it was constructed in 1980 for the Olympics Games and is to 30 Km/30 minutes of the Downtown); both “Domodedovo” and “Sheremetevo-2” receives flights from whole world. Some of the airlines that flights to Moscow are: Alitalia, Airfest, AirToor, Airservice, Air China, Aerónica, Air India, Air France, British Airways, Delta Airlines, Finnar, etc. The cheapest flights to and from the city are in Aeroflot, but the service in this airline is not good. It lasts around 10 hours by plane from USA and 3 or 4 hours from Paris or London. In addition to, Moscow has some other airports, which receives local flights from all Russia and the former Soviet Republics.
The buses are another transportation way. There are a great number of buses that connect Moscow with many towns and cities within Russia. Besides, the city has many buses, trolley buses and trams that cross Moscow. Tickets can be bought from the driver or in special Kiosks where they are cheaper. A trip by bus costs between 7 to 10 rubles ($0.30 to $0.40). If you use the bus service without ticket you must pay a fine of 100 rubles ($4). It is advisable to give exact change or buy from 10 to 20 tickets for 100 or 200 rubles.
Moscow has also 9 main rail stations which connect the city with all Russia, most of Europe, China and Mongolia. Average price for traveling by trains is around $2 to $4 per 100 Km, but the prices vary depending of the quality of service. For example a trip from Moscow to Saint Petesburg in first class sleeper cabin on the “”Red Arrow” (the most comfortable) cost around $80.
The best transport way to cross the city is definitely the metro. The Metro of Moscow is very comfortable and speed; it can get almost every location in the city by metro; since there are over 150 metro stations in Moscow. Besides, the metro stations of Moscow are the most beautiful in the World; since they are decorated with pictures, statutes and monuments. The trains are quite big and very frequent. Nevertheless, you could have difficulties to understand the paths, since most of information posters about metro routes are in Cyrillic alphabet, but there are also some posters in Latin alphabet. You can buy a metro card in any station; this card will allow you travel for 10 journeys and it costs 17 rubles ($0.7 approximately). The metro cards work with a magnetic system easy to use.
You can also cross the city by taxi, but it is more expensive and can be unsafe; since in Moscow every private car can become a cab. You must be careful, because you may be ripped off. Nevertheless, if you must take a taxi, you must negotiate the tariff. For example a trip from the “Sheremetevo” airport to the Downtown can cost between $30 and $60 depending on your bargaining power.
A great transport problem in Moscow is the traffic, which usually is madness with millions of cars, mad drivers and without directions signs. Therefore, a nice and elegant way to know the city is by boat, mainly in summer; the boats start at the "Kiewsk"i train station or the "Rossija" Hotel and pass by several tourist attractions like the Kremlin. There are also boats that travel to Saint Petesburg and Astrakhan by canals and rivers like the Volga Delta near the Caspian Sea.
