Weather in Porto


Porto is situated at the northern coast of the Mediterranean Sea; therefore its climate is moderated and dry during summer and wet and mild during winter. Nevertheless, one of the main differences with the climate of the southern Portuguese regions is the temperature in winter, which can be quite cold.

Usually, summers in Porto are very sunny and average temperatures fluctuate between 16ºC (61ºF) and 27ºC (81ºF); but occasionally, it occurs a heat wave, so temperatures can reach until 40ºC (104ºF) and the humidity rate decrease until quite low levels; nevertheless, these heat waves last from 5 to 10 days.
During summer, there are also some rainfalls; because of this fact, temperatures decrease until 22ºC (72ºF), but usually rainfalls aren't abundant and are short.
In winter, average temperatures fluctuate between 5ºC (41ºF) and 16ºC(61ºF); being the minimum temperatures during this time 0ºC (32ºF) at night. This is also the rainiest season in the city.
Both spring and fall are transition seasons. In fall between September and October; rainfalls increase, the same thing happens in spring from April to May. Nevertheless both seasons have a mild climate.
There are around 147 days with precipitations per year; being 119 the number of rainy days between October and May. The annual precipitation rate is 1065mm (42 inches).
Spring and early fall are the best times to visit the city. Summer (June, July and August) is the high season, because it is the major vacation time in Europe; therefore you must reserve your lodging in advance.
