Porto Nightlife
The Porto’s nightlife is probably one of the most exciting in Portugal. Most cafes, discos and bars are concentrated in the “Ribeira” zone in the old Downtown of the city. These entertainment places have commonly outdoor seating and are frequented mostly by students.
There are also several nice cafes and restaurants at “Cais de Gaia”, across the river; one of this clubs is “Contra Corrente” a good bar with a great waterfront terrace, which offers a nice view of Porto. Also at “Vila Nova de Gaia” is “Rock’s Bar” a nice bar with live music at 288 “Rua Rei Ramiro”.
Ribeira Neighborhood at Night
Another entertainment point is located at “Rua Santa Catarina” in the commercial district. There, it can find some excellent dance clubs like “Bar Industria”, a nice place in the “Foz” district. This club is frequented by artists, architects, writers and other cosmopolitan people. It opens from 22:30 to 4:00, only at weekend. “Industria” is located at 843 “Avenida do Brasil”.
One of the most famous and popular entertainment points is “Disco Swing”; this discotheque is located in the “Centro Comercial Italia” (mall Italia), at 766 “Rua Julio Dinis” in the residential “Rotonda de Boavista” neighborhood. “Disco Swing” is a great place to dance; since it play a wide spectrum of musical forms like rock, disco, punk, rave and others. “Disco Swing” opens from 20:00 to 6:00. There is minimum drink consumption (around 5 euros).
“Estado Novo” is another dance club very popular amongst Port’s people. This club works inside a former industrial building, which was originally a canning factory. This club has an excellent dance floor, good drinks and a nice environment. It opens from Thursday to Saturday between 23:00 and 4:00. Admission cost from 10 to 15 euros. Thursday is “ladies night”.
In Porto the “Fado” music (Typical Portuguese music) is not very popular and there are not many “Fado” clubs. Nevertheless; for live music “Aniki Bobo” is without doubt a classic place in Porto with three good dance floors; besides “Maus Habitos” is other excellent club in the Downtown very popular amongst the young people; it has live music and a nice ambient.
Porto offers also several bars and clubs frequented mainly by the gay community like “Boys’ Rus”, a gay club located at 63 “Rua Dr. Barbosa de Castro” or “Labirinto” a gay bar situated at 334 “Rua Nossa Senhora de Fatima”.
