Lisbon city owns a great variety of transport means, which greatly facilitate the life in the city. Besides, there are various ways to travel to Lisbon, by sea, air or land.

 

The fastest way to travel towards Lisbon is by plane. The Lisbon’s Airport receives both domestic and international flights. This modern airport is located to 6.5 Km to Downtown of Lisbon. From the Lisbon airport; it can get flights for whole Europe and many other zones of the world like North America, South America, Africa and Asia. The main Portuguese air line is TAP Air Portugal, which flies to many destinations in whole world. In the airport there is a shuttle service (bus 91 or Aero bus), which take you to the center in less than 20 minutes and costs around 3 euros. A trip by taxi from airport to Downtown, costs around 10 euros ($14).

 

Another great way to Lisbon is by train. It can arrive to Lisbon from Madrid and Paris by train. The main train station is “Santa Apolonia” located at “Infante Dom Henrique” avenue in the ancient Alfama district. Daily, there are two trains available towards Madrid. The international trains in Europe are very fast and comfortable as well as cheaper and efficient.

The metro is one of the best transport means in Lisbon. The metro is fairly and easy to navigate; there are only four lines, each assigned different colors and names (blue, yellow, green and red). The main metro station of the city is “Gare de Oriente” a beautiful and impressive complex that is the hub for several long-distance and suburban trains, as well as some destinations outside of Lisbon like Minho, Porto or Beiras; this station is located in the center of “Parque das Naçoes”, it is also a bus terminal. Another important station in the city is “Estaçao do Rossio”, which is situated amongst “Praça dos Restauradores” and “Praça Dom Pedro IV”, from this station, it can get trains to “Sintra”. You can get trains to “Cascais” from the “Cais do Sodré" station. There are several kinds of trains in Lisbon, being the two most common: the trains that stop at all stations of a route and those trains that only stop at a few stations, you should ask before getting on a train.  A metro ticket costs around 1 euro and you can buy a card called “7 colinas”, which will allow you travel by metro, bus and tram during several days depending of the value of the card. Usually metro is available from 6:30 am to 1:00 am.

 

You can get Lisbon also by bus; most buses arrive to “Rodovaria da Seteiros”. Bus services operate between some cities of Europe and Lisbon. Besides, the city has an extensive urban bus network which can be very useful for getting to outlying areas and attractions. A trip by bus through Lisbon costs around 1 euro, but you can buy the “7 colinas” card.

 

Another nice mode of transport in the city is the tram. The tram service in Lisbon was inaugurated in 1800. If you aboard a tram, you must pay to the tram driver. In Lisbon the tram service works from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.

Taxis in Lisbon are not expensive compared to others important capitals of the world and are very popular amongst the local people. They are usually diesel-engine Mercedes Benz. You can also get a radio taxi from your hotel, but it is slightly more expensive. The tariffs increase from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

 

If you prefer, you can rent a car for a price very reasonable. Most international car-rental companies are represented in Lisbon (Avis, Hertz, Budget, etc). It a great way to know Lisbon and all Portugal; since this country is quite small and has excellent roads. Most vehicles in Portugal are very economical and easy to navigate. This option is very cheap mainly from November to March, when it can rent a car for 85 euros or less.

 

In addition to, Lisbon has some funiculars like “Gloria”, which communicates “Praça dos Resaturadores ” with “Rua Sao Pedro de Alcantara” or Lavra, which communicates “Avenida da Liberatde” with “martires da Patria”.

 

Finally, one of the best ways to cross the city is by Ferry along the “Tagus” river. Many local citizens take the ferry to avoid the heavy traffic during the peak hours. The boats usually leave from “Cais de Alfadenga or “Cais do Sodré”. There are ferries available every 20 minutes and the trip lasts around 15 minutes.
