There are many stores, shops, markets, malls and supermarkets in Faro and the Algarve region. Most stores in Faro city are located at “Rua Santo Antonio” and “Rua Francisco Gomes” in the Downtown.

One of the best malls of Faro and Algarve is “Forum Algarve”, a big mall situated near Faro’s Airport at one of the main routes in Faro, the 125. This place includes a multiplex cinema and a hypermarket (Jumbo), where you can find a great variety of groceries, books, music, DVDs, a great Portuguese wine selection and much more. The whole place has been developed nicely, mostly open air, with an upstairs food court where it can enjoy a good fast food. Inside the mall, there are also a C&A clothes store; nevertheless, the rest of shops are quite small and up-market. Several important brands are represented in this mall like Benetton, Levis, Oysho, Stradivarius, Zara, Women’s Secret, FNAC, Imagimarium, etc. The shopping center has also an underground car parking. Besides, this place is excellent, if you are accompanied by kids; there are pushchairs available for the clients, family toilets, baby changing facilities and high chairs in every restaurant and café inside the commercial complex. It opens from 9:00 to 23:00.

The other great complex in Algarve is “Guia Shopping Center”, near Albufeira. This shopping center is also an entertainment complex, which is located at 125 just outside of Albufeira. This mall has several well known shops, multiplex cinema and a great number of nice cafes and restaurants on the top floor. In addition, there are many attractions for the kids, like pedal cars, pushchairs and many kinds of toys; all for free. The shopping center has also a nice crèche, which costs around 5 euros per hour. This place opens from 9:00 to midnight, but most shops open only from 10:00 to 22:00.

Faro offers also great and cheap shoes and purses made of leather, embroidery and crochet works. In addition, there is good gold jewelry of high value. The Portuguese tiles are also of high quality and they are quite cheap in Faro. There are also excellent works of pottery; since working with clay is an old tradition in the Algarve region. Crystal, copperware and cork products are also excellent in Faro.

If you like wine and cigarettes, you can take advantage of the low prices for them in this city. There is not limit on what can be taken home for personal consumption.

But, if you prefer to know a traditional Portuguese market; you should go to the “Mercado de Faro”, located in” Largo do Mercado” in the town center. There, it can find handicrafts, traditional clothes and many other products of the region.

In Faro most small stores usually open from 9:00 to 19:00. In Portugal shops are not obliged to exchange goods purchased, if they are not defective. There is a VAT (tax rate) of 19%, which is charged on most products and services. Prices are usually clearly marked and credit cards are accepted in stores but not everywhere.
