Eating in Faro


Faro is situated in Algarve, one of the best zones of Portugal to eat. Most restaurants in this region have very reasonable prices, mainly for wines; which are of excellent quality. The Algarve’s cooking is based on fresh local products, mainly seafood. Nevertheless, Portuguese cuisine has also excellent meals based in meat. The flavor of the meat is often disguised or dismissed by the strength of the sauce or garnishing; nevertheless, food is delicious. Besides, in Portugal soups are also very popular and tasty, thanks to the great variety of vegetables available. Do not be too surprised to see a Portuguese ordering a soup to finish his meal.
Sardinhas Assadas
Some typical dishes from Faro and Algarve are:
• "Arroz de Marisco", it is one of the most representative dishes of Algarve. The “Arroz de Marisco” (seafood rice) is composed by rice stew with a great variety of fresh shellfish; chopped tomatoes, coriander and onions.
• "Cataplana", this is a meal prepared on a trapped steam-cooking basis. It contains usually a mixture of prawns, crabs, shrimps, clams, chicken, pork, herbs and seasoning.
• "Améijoas a Espanhola", they are clams prepared in their open shells with onion, garlic sauce and tomatoes.
• "Sardinhas Assadas", the main ingredient of this meal is a group of fresh sardines. They are dusted with salt and then are quickly grilled. The sardines are served with boiled potatoes and salad.
• "Bife a Frigideira", it is a rump steak with ham on top fried and with a slice of bread.
• "Bife de Peru", thick tasty slices of turkey fried, flavored with garlic and accompanied with salad and potatoes.
• “Empanadinhas de Castelo Branco”, they are pies stuffed with meat, which is flavored with onions and white wine.
• "Sopa de Pedra", the name of this soup means “Stone soup” in English. It is a typical food, which is prepared with onion, egg, lettuce, lots of garlic and a small stone for respect the tradition.
• "Massa de Doce Regional", this is one of the most famous desserts of Algarve. It is composed by almond paste mixed with sugar and molded with several shapes like fruits or animals.
• "Quiejo de Figo", this dessert is composed by layers of stuffed figs, which are compressed into a cake form; then this cake is flavored with crushed almonds, cinnamon, anis and other herbs.
Most meals are usually served with tasty country bread, pate and olives. Besides, chicken is also a common food in this zone. A delicious “Bica” express coffee is the usual finish of the meal.
Most nice restaurants are located “Mochique” and “Albufeira” areas. The restaurants in these zones offer a great variety of local and international food, including Portuguese, French, Italian and German cooking.
