As any Brazilian city in Sao Paulo football (soccer) is not only a sport is almost a life style. Sao Paulo has some of the main football clubs of Brazil and the World. The city hosts famous teams like Corinthias, Sao Paulo FC (Football Club), Palmeiras, Juventude, Nacional, Portuguesa and Santos. All these clubs have won the national Championship several times and some of them have won the “Copa Libertadores de America” (the main football championship of America).


Santos is also the team that made famous to Pele the most famous football player of the World. This legendary club is located on the outskirts of the city in the “Vila Belmiro” neighborhood. This club was also the team of other world football stars like “Diego” the best player of the German league (Bündes Liga) and “Robinho”, one of the Real Madrid’s stars. Santos owns also a nice museum dedicated to the club, Pele and their great feats.

Sao Paulo has several important and historic stadiums, which hosts some of the most famous and important football matches of Brazil and the world; amongst them: the “Palestra Italia” (Palmeiras’ stadium), “Parque Sao Jorge” (Corintians’ stadium), “”Rua Javari” (Portuguesa’s stadium), and the famous “Morumbi”, the Sao Paulo FC’s stadium, which is one of the biggest and most beautiful stadiums in the world. Besides, in 2014 Brazil will organize the FIFA World Cup and the “Morumbi” will be one of the stadiums to this amazing event.

 

In Sao Paulo, there are several travel agencies, which offer guided tours to the main stadiums and matches of the city. Tickets for matches cost between R$10 ($6) and R$40 ($23). A football match in a Brazilian stadium is an experience that you will never forget.

But, football is not the one sport in Sao Paulo. Another great sport event in the city is the famous “Brazilian F1 Grand Prix”, which takes place in the legendary “Interlagos” circuit (officially named “Autodromo José Carlos Pace”) which is located  16 Km (10 miles) to Downtown. In this circuit, the great Brazilian pilot “Ayrton Senna” won several times this race before his tragic death in 1994. In 2006, it was the last time that a Brazilian pilot won this race; since Felipe Massa who was born in Sao Paulo won the Brazilain Grand Prix, driving for the “Scuderia Ferrari”.

 

The other great sport event in the city is the “San Silvestre” marathon, which takes place every year on December 31, since 1925. This marathon is 15 Km (9.3 miles) long and gather 15000 participants. It is one of the most important and greatest marathons in the World.

Besides, Sao Paulo offers a great sport infrastructure. There are many sport clubs, where it can do many sports like volleyball, basketball, tennis, golf, swimming, water polo, handball, rugby, futsal, etc. Some nice sport clubs are: “Esporte Clube Pinheiros”, “Clube Atlhetico Paulistano”, “Esporte Clube Banespa”, “Associação Atlética Hebraica”. In addition to, there are also several good clubs like “Clube Indiano”, where it can do all kinds of sports, near “Guapiranga” lake; this lake is also a great sailing place.

 

But, if you prefer to run, "Ibirapuera" park is the most popular place in Sao Paulo, mainly in the early morning or in the evenings after work. Sao Paulo is a city that loves sports; therefore it is a great place to practice them.
