Weather in Rio de Janeiro


The climate in Rio de Janeiro is a typical tropical climate with high temperatures and high humidity rates during all year; that is due its location in the tropical South Atlantic. The annual average temperatures fluctuates between 23ºC(74ºF) and 30ºC(86ºF). Nevertheless, during some days of summer (between January and March), they can reach until 38º (100ºF), but that occurs only 3 or 5 days per year. During winter (between June and August), the temperatures in the zone decrease; but, it is cold never; during this time climate is cool and dry. The zones near to the mountains are usually cooler than those close the coast, but these zones enjoy also a pleasant climate and warm temperatures.

Most rainfalls occur in summer and part of autumn and spring (between December and March). The annual rainfall rate in Rio is 1101 mm (43.4 inches), being the rainfall rate between December and April 639 mm (25.2 inches). Rio has also around 2 days with Thunderstorms and 18 days with fog per year. Nevertheless, flash floods during wet season cause serious damage, mainly in the “fabelas” (poor neighborhoods).
The averages rates of humidity are quite high; usually average humidity at mornings is 85% and 68% at nights. Rio enjoy commonly around 130 hours of sunshine per month.
Usually in Rio de Janeiro the wind blows from north to south, with an average speed of 14.5 Km/h (9mph).
The best time to visit Rio is in summer, but it is also the high season to the tourists; therefore, the beaches and hotels are very crowded and the prices increases. But, Rio is worth visiting in any time.
