Best of Maceio


Maragogi
It is a town situated 125 Km north of Maceio; and is after the state’s capital the main tourist destination in the state; because of its amazing, calm-wave and sunny beaches, which are surrounded by coconut trees and the tropical forest. This place enjoys a great climate all year; it is also a great place to scuba-diving thanks to its beautiful coral reefs. Besides, this place owns a nice natural pool known as Gales.
Farol (Lighthouse)
It is an urban highland in front to the sea. This place owes its name to a nice lighthouse located in this zone; this lighthouse served to guide the ships towards Jaguara port, when they navigated along the coast. This place was also an important military location during the colonial period. From this point it can get a wonderful view of the sea and the port.
Theo Brandao Museum
This museum is considered the greatest cultural reference of the Alagoana state. It was opened to the public in 2002. It owes its name to the famous Brazilian folklorist “Theotônio Brandão Vilela”; who donate his personal popular art collection to this museum; this collection was composed by photographs, books and leaflets. Now the museum exhibits several objects of the Brazilian culture and other countries, like Mexico, Spain, Portugal and some African countries. Most of museum’s pieces are from Alagoana and Brazilian northeastern. It highlight the collection of “Moringas ” (ceramics with human form) of the artist “Julio Rufino” and the ceramic works of the artists “Vitalino” and “No Caboclo”. The museum owns also a great audio-visual collection which is composed by films, videos, slides and cassettes about the former cultural manifestations from the zone. The museum is located at 1490 “da Paz” avenue.
Metropolitan Cathedral of Maceio
It was founded in 1859. This beautiful church is a mixture of architectural styles; since it has been remodeled several times; nevertheless, this building conserve an elegant and harmonious style. The church is dedicated to “Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres” (Our Lady of Pleasants). The façade is neoclassic and the major Altar is a masonry work that replaced the original altar made of wood. Besides, the church is decorated with silver chandeliers and golden clad pulpits. The cathedral is situated at “Pedro II” square.
Church of “Bom Jesus dos Martirios”
It was a former chapel, which was reconstructed in 1881 and became one of the main churches in the city. The church has an eclectic architectural style, which mix baroque, neo-gothic and classic features. They highlight the Portuguese tiles and towers with twisted crowns. This church is located at “Floriano Peixoto” square.
Church of “Nossa Senhora do Livramento”
This is one of the main churches in the Alagoana state. It is a neoclassical building, which save inside a beautiful painting of “La Imaculada Conceiçao” (Immaculate conception). Outside this church ; there are a gastronomical fair, where you can find many typical meals like trays full of “pes-de-moleque”, “broas” of maize and “bolos de macaxeira”. This church is located at “Sen. Mendonça” street.
Pierre Chalita Museum
This museum is dedicated to the Brazilian art between XVII and XIX centuries. The museum owns a collection composed by around 3000 art pieces amongst paintings, sculptures, silver jewelry and furniture. There are also several works of the Brazilian artists Tarcila do Amaral and Chalita. This museum is located at 44 “Marechal Floriano” square.
Brazilian Art Museum
This museum saves one of the greatest collections of Brazilian painting in the world. Nevertheless, most museums’ art pieces were made mainly by artists of this zone like alagoanos, sergipanos, paraibanos, pernambucanos and cearenses. Besides, the museum organizes currently modern paint expositions and other cultural events. It is located at 77 “M. Duarte” square in the architectonical complex of Jaragua.
Jaragua
Jaragua is the old port and Downtown of the city; it is known also as the Old town. During the XIX century this neighborhood was the main commercial and political point. Jaragua owns the most impressive former buildings of this zone of Brazil. Now the former warehouses of this port have been turned into night clubs, restaurants and bars. Therefore, this place is now the center of the nightlife in Maceio.
