Viareggio Festivals and Events

Viareggio Carnival

One of the most beautiful and biggest carnival celebrations in Europe is hosted in the coasts of Tuscany. This carnival was created by some local who organized a different Sunday on the summer of 1873. This carnival began like a protest of masked people against the chief tax collector and the too many taxes.
Year by year over a million of visitors come to the Viareggio Carnival from over the world. This carnival is a procession of big decorated figures which walk for the main street of the city; in 1923 the first moving figure was made.
The main component of these giant allegorical floats is paper. These floats are the main attraction for 4 Sundays of the carnival season.
In the carnival's season many cultural events, concerts, festivals and masked balls are organized in many districts that also have sporting events and comedy shows; even the restaurants made a special menu for the carnival.
