Siena Museums


The most of museums in Siena contains fine examples of paintings and sculptures from the Romanic, Gothic and Pre-Renaissance periods. Here is a list of the most interesting museums in this marvellous city.
National Picture Gallery

Inside Palazzo Buonsignori, Pinacoteca Nazionale houses a valuable collection of masterpieces of Siena art, painted between the 13th and 17th centuries. Great masters included are Pietro, Ambrogio Lorenzetti with “La Picola Maesta”, Duccio di Buoninsegna and Simone Martini with “Madonna con Bambino”.

Civic Museum

Located inside the Municipal building, today the Palazzo Pubblico is still used to conduct some official business. The museum houses several masterpieces by Siena and Italian artists: panels, canvases and frescoes that dates back from 14th to the 18th centuries such as astronomical frescoes and 19th century frescoes. It opens daily from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm.
Museum of Metropolitan Work

Originally the museum should have been a new cathedral for the city, but it was never completed. Museum of Metropolitan Work is located in a building that dates back to the 14th century. It contains the famous sculpture “della Maesta” made by Duccio di Buoninsegna.
Museum Opera del Duomo of Siena

Located in the corner where the larger Duomo would have been. Near to the most spectacular cathedral in Siena. It holds all the great works and other many sacred works dated between 1300 and 1500 are found here including the statue of Giovanni Pisano. On the ground-floor it hosts ten statues by Pisano and a lot of paintings, jewellery and illuminated manuscripts which come from the Cathedral. Many important works by Pisano, Jacopo della Quercia (Madonna with Child). On the first floor the museum exhibits the greatest masterpiece of the Sienese school of painting, the famous Maesta by Duccio di Buoninsegna.

Natural History Museum

The museum contains important exhibit of minerals and rocks. Worthy of note are the samples of meteorite stones which fell on a village near Siena in 1764.
The Natural History Museum is split into several sections, Geologic Section, Zoological Section, Anatomical Section, Botanical Section and Other collections. Collections began back in the 1600's which were mainly through donations and gifts.
Hospital of Santa Maria of the Scale

The museum was once a hospital and orphanage and it was built in the 800's. Inside of it you will find ornate architecture and one of the oldest Italian stained glass pieces. Collections by Sienese artists are shown here. Significant parts of the museum include the Sagrestia Vecchia, housing Lorenzo Vecchietta's paintings, the Pellegrinaio, the Capella del Manto, the church of the Santissima Annunziata, and the Capella della Madonna.

Museum of the Biccherna Tablets

Located in the Palazzo Piccolomini, the museum holds collections of ancient manuscripts, tablets of the state ledgers and books. Also included in the collection are wooden tablets, dated between 1257 and 1659, and painted by famous Sienese artists.
Museum for Children

Museo per Bambini is considered for ages 4 until 11 years. Activities and programs are designed to offer children exposure to art, educating them in language, technique and content.
