Siena Festivals and Events


Italian people are very keen on celebrations and festivals, so always you will find something for everyone from local religious processions to avant-garde musical events. During spring, summer and autumn the small communities in and surrounding Siena holds small celebrations from political to religious and celebrates particular products, foods or local specialities. Some of them are known as “Sagra della Bruschetta”, “Sagra del Buongustaio” and “Festa del’ Uva’”
Local festivals, mainly based on agricultural traditions such as olive harvesting and wine-making, besides religious festivals for Carnival and Easter, take place in all over the province around Siena.
Siena Palio

Siena Palio takes place each July 2nd and August 16th, the race is run around the Piazza del Campo, and is over in around 75 seconds with an impatient crowd of 33,000 people closeted in a square. Excitement charged in the air, the horse’s race around the arena, the jockey’s intent both on racing as well as displaying open hostility to fellow jockeys. The entire world is filled with thundering hooves and the din of the crowd.

Siena Jazz Festival

During July and August months, Siena Jazz Organization performs many open air concerts. Each summer, the city hosts two-week programme of jazz music and performances at the Siena Jazz Festival. The festival stage the musical performances ranging from old jazz legends to new and emerging talents from the local jazz school all of them in various venues around Siena city. Also the prestigious Siena International Jazz Workshop runs simultaneously to the festival and offers music students an incredible forum in which to explore the depths of jazz music. Visitors enjoy watching this amazing spectacle with horses and their riders stroll into the plaza in their traditional uniforms in hopes of crossing the finish line first.
Maggiolata Festival

Located in Castiglione d’Orcia just outside of Siena, the festival of Maggiolata celebrated the coming of May with ancient traditional songs and dances on the 30th April and 1st May.
Olive Oil Fair

This traditional festival celebrates the oil produced from the first crop of the olive season on December, first week. Non doubt visitors enjoy the music, and dance.
