Shopping in Thessaloniki


Thessaloniki centre is small but yet blessed with an abundance of shops, markets, bars and coffee shop which suit all budgets and tastes. Shops are open Monday, Wednesday and Saturday from 9am to 3pm and on Tuesday and Thursday from 9am to 8pm. The major shopping areas are: Tsimiski, Venizelou, Agias Sofias, Ermou, Mitropoleos and Egnatia.
Tsimiski Street is a good place to gain bearings, full of stores and caters effortlessly for the needs of any shopper from music, cosmetics to unique handcrafted jewellery. Agias Sofias housed the latest fabric, textiles and designs complete with price tags. Also there are numerous venues for stopping and enjoying of frappe or cappuccino, in any spot. But wherever one chooses, expect to be collared by street sellers. The market is an authentic delight to traveller’s eye, situated between Aristotelous and Ionos Dragoumi. Barrels of olives are displayed in colourful arrays not just the classic black or green. Fresh meats, poultry and fish are sold on site. Herbs, spices, fresh fruit and vegetables, wines, cheeses, honey and nuts can all be purchased to compliment any Greek culinary delight. In addition rugs, cowbells, coffee pots and religious pictures and figurines can all be found here.

Thessaloniki is also famous for its food markets and Modiano is one of the biggest in the city and well-known all over Europe. Near to market there are many flower shops that give a special colour to the area and the Turkish old baths Giahoudi Hamam.
Thessaloniki is a shopper’s paradise. Visitors could find an impressive variety of goods such as fine antiquities, exquisite jewellery, furs and high quality leather goods.
