Due to good quality of the products and the amazing taste of Greece’s food and wine; Chania as part of this country has also a first class cuisine. So is common for Greeks to make a lunch of Mezedes or Hors D’oeuvre. Typical dishes include fried meatballs, squash balls, octopus, shrimp, squid, cheese, olives, tzatziki (garlicky yogurt and cucumbers), eggplant dip, small sausages and giant beans. For the evening meal, Greek taverns serve such specialities as Moussaka (lamb, eggplant and bechamel sauce), pastitsio (lamb or goat meat with macaroni and tomatoes), stifado (braised beef with onions) and paidakia (grilled lamb or goat chops). A lot of restaurants, Greek tavernas and outzeri(seving ouzo, an anise-flavored liqueur) visitors will find in all tourist areas of Chania.

Also Greece is famous for its herbs and spices which they use in every dish to add an extra taste and delight the senses. The famous herbs of great quality and easy to find in Greece are the chamomile, the mountain tea, sage, basil, mint, parsley and much more. The supreme Greek spices are the sesame, the cumin, the machlepi and the valuable red saffron.

Furthermore Greece is considered as a big producer of wines and local alcohols. Tsipouro is a strong alcohol a bit like Ouzo (the most famous Greek alcohol is the trade mark of the country) but with a stronger taste of anis. Chania like in other parts of Greece make its own Tsipouro, also called Raki which is really strong. Greeks drink it with ice and sometimes add a bit of water.
