Chania Beaches


The variety and extent of Crete’s coastline make it possible for bathers enjoying of numerous different places to swim, all of them lapped by warm and crystal clear water. Due to its natural beauty and variety of sights, attracts many tourists from all over the world. Also water sports are available in the majority of beaches. Chania is full of wonderful beaches and isolated coves with soft sand and crystalline waters, follow are some of them.
Falassarna Beach

One of the nicest and natural beaches in Crete and one of the ten best beaches in Greece, Falassarna is located 45km west of Chania.
Falassarna is a sandy beach with clear water with amazing views during the sunset. The sea is always so clear and it tempts to the visitors go for swimming. Also there is plenty of space to practice water-sports or beach tennis and also there is a volley field on the beach.
In the village, the Galasia Thea is and ideal place for coffee and home-cooked dishes and the Sunset taverna is nice place for fish and classic Cretan food.
The ruins of the ancient harbour-city of Falassarna can be explored during an excursion on the north of the beach. The excavations have exposed some of the walls and buildings of the city. But there are no signs of the harbour now.

Agii Apostoli Beach

Only to 4.5 km away from Chania, Agii Apostoli is the area which has picturesque bays and fine sandy beaches.
Platanias Beach

Situated 11 km west of Chania and built on the banks of the ancient river Iardanos, now it is known as Platanias. Also tourism is well developed in this city surrounding by many hotels and shops.
Balos Beach

The idyllic lagoon of Balos with its turquoise blue water has a lovely sandy beach, shallow waters for swimming, pink shoreline and warm. The beach of Balos is covered with fine white sand; the same sand covers the bottom of the sea and grants to the sea an emerald colour. Visitors can to get a boat from the Kastelli harbour at about 10am to visit the Balos beach; otherwise they will have to go on foot. The road to the beach stops about 2 km before it and the visitor has to follow a pave road with gorgeous views to reach it. It takes about half an hour and the climbing in the end is more difficult.

Kolymbari Beach

Kolymbari is situated 23km away from Chania. Visitors can walk around it and see the monastery of Gonia, talk with the locals and maybe relax on the peaceful beach.
Kasteli Beach

Kasteli is situated 20km after passing Kolymbari and is known for the town of Kasteli which is the cultural centre of Western Crete. Visitors could find organized camping’s and beautiful long beaches.
Elafonisi Beach

One of the most beautiful in Crete attracting many tourists every year, Elafonisi is located to 80km from Chania. Also it is called an excellent sandy beach with blue and green sea and colourful sandy beach. In addition there are a small islet in front of the beach with the same name, a small café on the beach with fast food and soft drinks.

Georgioupolis Beach

Situated 39km east of Chania, Georgioupolis is a small town where visitors can appreciate various kinds of birds and animals in the wildlife refuge. Also there is a long sandy beach.
Agria Gramvoussa Beach

Agria Gramvoussa is a firm rock against the ranging waves and its situates 14km to northwest of Kasteli.
Paleochora Beach

Paleochora is situated 77km south from Chania and the area is full of Byzantine churches. It has been built on the top of a small peninsula, below the ruins of the Venetian Castle, and it is washed by the waves on three sides. Some time ago Paleochora was a hippie destination but nowadays it is a preferable touristic village which is visited by many locals every weekend. Also there are two beautiful and picturesque bays with fantastic beaches in the village; Halikia an excellent place for windsurfing and Pahia Ammos which is a pebble beach

Sougia Beach

A lovely beach, warm climate and unspoilt nature, the Beach of Sougia is situated 66km south of Chania. NW of the harbour is the mouth of the river Kakos, where you can see the Gorge of Lyssos.
Sfakia Beach

The beach is built on the coast on the rugged rocks of the mountains. The beach of Sfakia is situated to 70km southeast of Chania. In the town of Sfakia you will find tavernas, hotels and tourist shops. From the picturesque harbour, boats leave every day for excursions to Loutro, to Agia Roumeli which is the entrance of Samaria Gorge and to Gavdos the southernmost Greek island.
Agia Marina Beach

Situated to 10km away from Chania, Agia Marina is becoming a cosmopolitan center with new hotels built on this road by the sea. It is a very famous beach resort. In the waterfront of Agia Marina there are some of the most famous touristic sandy beaches of Chania (Ammos and Ilios, Kosta Kosta, Okeanos) with beach bars, pool bars, sport choices (jet skiing, windsurfing, beach tennis, beach volley), food facilities and lovely views on the islet of Agioi Theodori.

Loutro Beach

Where visitors can take small boats to run daily excursions to Loutro and Agia Roumeli, the village of Loutro was built amphitheatrically on the bay if Finikas and situated 7km west of Sfakia.
Frangokastello Beach

Located in front of the Frankish castle, this beautiful sandy beach with warm and shallow water is situated 79km of Chania.
