Many people, especially Americans are afraid of the Greek food because they think that food is so spicy but isn’t true. Usually restaurants will also show you their assortment of meats and fishes fresh for grilling, but some of the fish may have been frozen and the squid generally comes from the Atlantic or Monterrey California in summer months. So be careful and don’t order anything fried unless it is cooked. Remember that 90% of people in restaurants speak English so is a good reference for visitors.

About Greek breakfast, fancy hotel offers a select food like a buffet table, piled high with croissants, fruit, yogurt, eggs, bacon, sausage, cheeses, cakes, pastries, cookies and more, constantly refilled. By other side in inexpensive hotel breakfast could be at the subsistence level with coffee, paxamadia (a piece of hard crusty bread), maybe some yogurt and a boiled egg. In Doris, an oldest shop you will find greener pastures like loukamades (fried dough with honey).

Athenians, like other Greeks in Greece love to go out for dinner or lunch. Nowadays the traditional Greek tavern is still the main place and a popular choice where visitors get to in, and really they will try the typically Greek traditional food. The typical fare of those taverns is a simple menu of traditional Greek food, washed down with Greek wines, mainly Retsina served straight from the barrel.

Moussaka - Typical food in Athens
The national dish - Moussaka in Athens

In Greek cuisine visitors can rediscover the original feeling of taste. Like Moussaka, Greek desserts and Greek salads like Horiatiki, Melitzanosalata, Angourontomata, Maroulosalata, Psarosalata among other deliciosus dishes. The most popular wine in Greece is Retsina one of the oldest wines in Greece. Still today you can find places and taverns that sale Greek wine from the barrel. Other popular wines in Greece are Kokineli and Brusco. However the best Greek aperitif known all over the world is Ouzo, for its special flavour of anise, among the best ouzo are the ones from Samos and Lesvos island, some of the ouzo you can ask in Greece is Mini, Giokarinis, Plomari and Ouzo 12. You can drink Ouzo straight but the best way is to mix it with water. Metaxa is the world famous Greek Brandy, it has a rather sweet taste and you can find it as 3, 5 or 7 stars.

The lifeblood of Greek society are frappes which are made with instant Nescafe mixed with milk, water lots of sugar and ice, a frappe will provide you with a chemical buzz like caffeine only more intense. Greeks drink these all day and never leave the coffee. Maybe the reason so much wine and whisky is consumed in Greece is directly related to the frappe consumption.

Eating out in Athens can be a real gourmet experience so do not just settle for the ubiquitous moussaka and stuffed tomatoes, get around and discover the hidden gems that the city can offer to satiate your appetite and, at the same time, enjoy the real Greek experience.
