Eating in Frankfurt

Not surprisingly, given its status as one of Germany's main urban centres, Frankfurt has a wealth of gastronomic possibilities. Whether it's vegan breakfast, Japanese afternoon tea or a gourmet Italian dinner you're after, you'll be able to find it somewhere. As for drink, the city is situated close to several famous wine-producing regions, and is itself an important beer centre. Binding is among the largest breweries in the country, while Henninger is a major exporter, and both produce a wide range of products. However, the city's favourite beverage is apple wine (Apfelwein; known as Ebbelwei or Ebbelwoi in the local dialect), a cider variant best sampled in the specialist taverns in Sachsenhausen.

The apple-wine tavern ( Apfelweinwirtschaft ) is as distinctive a Frankfurt institution as the Bierkeller is of Munich, or the Weinstube of Stuttgart. And in addition to the apple wine, they invariably offer hearty local cuisine , usually at very moderate prices. Although nearly all the best-known establishments are concentrated in Sachsenhausen, others are dotted all over the city. They're strongly traditional, a fact reflected in the surprisingly restricted opening hours many choose to operate.

Adolf Wagner, Schweizer Str. 71. One of the best of the taverns, with a lively clientele ranging from young to middle-aged. Frequently packed out. Open daily from 11am.

Atschel, Wallstr. 7. This offers a more extensive menu than many of its counterparts, and has bargain set lunches. There's a garden at the back. Closed Mon.

Klaane Sachsehäuser, Neuer Wall 11. A family place favoured by native Sachsenhauseners which has been run since 1886 by five generations of the same family. Open from 4pm, closed Sun.

Zu den Drei Stuebern, Dreieichstr. 28. Mainly patronized by locals; has a small bar-room and pleasant terrace at the rear. Open weekdays only from 3.30pm.

Zum Eichkatzerl, Dreieichstr. 29. An excellent traditional tavern which is particularly popular on account of its low-priced food. Open from 3pm, closed Mon.

Zum Feuerrädchen, Textorstr. 24. One of several traditional taverns on the street. Open from 3pm on weekdays, 11am at weekends, closed Mon.

Zum Gemalten Haus, Schweizer Str. 67. A bit kitschy with its oil-painted facade and stained-glass windows, yet quite intimate and lively, with long rows of tables outside. Open Wed-Sun from 10am.

Zur Buchscheer, Schwarzsteinkautweg 7. Set amidst the rose gardens on the southeastern edge of Sachsenhausen and very popular with walkers. Good home cooking and home-produced apple wine. Open from 3pm on weekdays, from 11am at weekends. Take S-Bahn #3 or #4 to Louisa.

Zur Eulenburg, Eulengasse 46. This Bornheim tavern, which has a predominantly middle-aged clientele, can rival any in Sachsenhausen for both food and Ebbelwei . Open Wed-Sun from 4pm. Take U-Bahn #4 to Seckbacher Landstrasse.

Zur Germania, Textorstr. 16. Another of the recommendable taverns on this street; nearly always crowded. Open daily from 4pm.
