Edinburgh is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city that demands the best transport choices. Flying to Edinburgh as an alternative to rail travel involves having to find transport from the airport to the city centre while travelling by coach or bus can take too long over long distances.

Lothian Bus in Edinburgh

By bus

The bus travel infrastructure in Edinburgh is one of the best in the United Kingdom. Every area of Edinburgh city is serviced and you can travel as far out as 10 miles outside Edinburgh’s boundaries with a single day ticket.

During a holiday in Edinburgh you will find that going by bus is a real joy and hassle free experience. The city has two bus operators, each useful in different ways: Lothians Buses are for travelling in Edinburgh itself and to a few places beyond the city boundaries and First Edinburgh are the bus operator when you want to travel to places around Edinburgh and to further away areas as Stirling.

On the whole, public transport in and around Edinburgh is comfortable and safe. It covers many places of interest for tourists. Drivers are helpful and friendly.

By tram

For Edinburgh’s commuters trams are an appealing alternative which are travelling in and around the city. But their introduction is only a few years ago. It is planned that world class modern trams will be running along Edinburgh’s streets from 2010.

By coach

Due to its excellent coach links, Edinburgh is well connected to the rest of Scotland for travel to the other Scottish towns and countryside. Really a coach travel is cheapest way to get around and see some of truly great places around Edinburgh, although probably not as comfortable or fast.

By train

Efficient, fast and comfortable way to get to Edinburgh from other places in Scotland and England, travelling by train is more expensive that other means of transport. Whether you want a journey that takes you to Edinburgh as fast as possible, so taking the train is a good way to get there. Non doubt a genuine experience into beautiful Scottish countryside and an opportunity to see some of the most breathtaking scenery in Europe and you should not be missed.

All train services between Edinburgh and other Scottish towns are run by First Scotrail, the local train operator. But whether you travel between places in England and Edinburgh must choose GNER or Virgin Trains.
