Sliema, as the same of other Maltese Islands, is Catholic and has a diversity of festivities which make up the religious year. Religious festivities, like Christmas, are highly celebrated; all families try to be together and reinforce their bonds. The families prepare large Christmas and Holy Week of Easter lunches and give thanks for all they have with their relatives. During these days the streets are lined with carts, selling wide assortment of different foods as well as the more traditional sweets and delicacies.

Carnival
The carnival takes place in February and it takes one week long. It has religious origins and it is possible to see coloured parades, street parties and everybody with fancy dress costume to enjoy the festive spirit.

The Mediterranean Food Festival
This Food Festival is celebrated by Maltese people for four days and can bring to your taste all that is great about Mediterranean food and drink. The festival conglomerate around ten Mediterranean countries including Morocco, Italy, France, Spain, Turkey, Cyprus, Libya, Lebanon and Greece.

The International String Orchestra Festival
Talented string musicians from within the country and across the globe meet in a stimulating, productive and relaxed environment and perform music to the highest level. An exceptional selection of top international professional musicians gives demonstrations of their talent, master classes and workshops.

Malta Mediterranean Folk Festival
This is a festival is celebrated in June and organized by the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts and includes local and foreign participants. Seven Maltese folk groups of improvisers, ballad singers, high-pitched singers and folk musicians are participating.

Malta Jazz Festival
It is celebrated in the third weekend of July and held at a venue close to the city of Valleta. This annual festival is organized by the Malta Council for Culture and Arts. The Malta Jazz Festival has all kinds of jazz lovers with a diverse merge of musicians and a rapidly growing international reputation.

Malta Fireworks Festival
The Malta Fireworks Festival is held annually in either April or May and takes three days long. The festival forms part of the commemorative events celebrating Malta’s accession into the European Union and gives Maltese residents the chance to enjoy spectacular fireworks displays along the promenade of the Grand Harbour as well a variety of music and food.
