Rowing in Oxford

A feature of rowing in Oxford is a bump. Due to narrowness of the Thames River at Oxford, when rowing eights are racing there is a staggered starts since they cannot row abreast. A bump race is a form of rowing race in which a number of boats chase each other in single file; each boat attempts to catch (“bump”) the boat in front without being caught by the boat behind.
Punting in Oxford

In the summer punting on Oxford’s rivers is a popular recreational activity, conjuring up images of Edwardian picnics. The punt is a shallow-bottomed boat propelled with the aid of a long pole. You can also hire someone to do the punting for you, although it is easy and funnier to do it yourself. Punt rental available at Magdalen Bridge, from Salter’s at Folly Bridge, and from the Cherwell Boathouse in North Oxford.
