Beijing is a transportation hub in the People’s Republic of China (RPC); it has a sophisticated transportation system with a network of roads, railways, expressways and a major airport; all as a result of the economic reforms. Beijing has air connections to a great number of cities in the world and international trains that connects Beijing to Russia (Moscow), Mongolia, North Korea, Hong Kong and Vietnam.

Airport
The air system connects Beijing to almost every point in China. The main airport in is the Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK), about 20km northeast of Beijing city center. This is a modern airport; laser scan technology is used for luggage inspections, computer-aided aircraft guiding systems, security equipment, and electronic display boards that provides arrival and departure information in both Chinese and English.

Subway
It is a rapid transit rail network that serves urban Beijing and outlying suburbs. With 93 stations and 5 lines in operation (two above ground and three underground) with 142km of tracks, it is the second largest subway system in China, after the Shanghai Subway. This network is undergoing rapid expansion in order to serve adequately to the mass transit needs of the city and the 2008 Olympic Games. It is an efficient way to get around Beijing for a flat cheap fee. The subway system is closed in the evenings after midnight.

Trains
Beijing is a railway hub; there are two major railway stations in Beijing, the Railway Station or the Central Station and the Beijing West Railway Station. The railways connect Beijing to GuangZhou, Shanghai, Harbin, Chengde and QinHangDao. Direct trains to Kowloon and Hong Kong depart from Beijing and there are international trains, including lines to Russia and Korea, which run through it.

Bus
The bus services if for real adventurous people out there. There are about 600 bus routes with prices starting at 1RMB, for a non-air-conditioned crowded bus, and 2RMB with some air-conditioning and less crowded bus.

Taxi
All taxis in Beijing are metered; you will pay around 1.6 Yuan for each kilometer and around 10 for the first 4km; the official taxis have a red sticker on their windows. Unfortunately, there are some fake taxis that even have meters (possible modified). But it is possible to identify real taxis by the license plate; they start with the letter “B”, whereas fake taxis start with “C, E, F, G, J” o other letters. Also, it is a good idea to know the rough direction, cost and distance of your destination, finding it in a map or asking the locals, to avoid being taken advantage of.
